I am honored to publish this special issue of “Scar” in The Journal of Wound Technology. This issue mainly consists of papers presented at the conference, “International Scar Meeting in Tokyo 2010”, which was held on November 30th and December 1st.

The purpose of this meeting was to facilitate the discussion of treatment of scars and fibrotic disorders and the analysis of these mechanisms from international viewpoints. This meeting was co-organized with the 5th annual meeting of the Japan Scar Workshop which was established in 2006, and the Japanese Society for Wound Healing, established in 1971 provided scientific support for the International Scar Meeting in Tokyo 2010.

Throughout the meeting, many topics related to scars such as various treatments of post-burn scars, traumatic scars, keloids and hypertrophic scars, aesthetic management of scars, reconstructive surgery of scar contractures, and basic research on fibrotic disorders, were discussed in depth. Participants came from 23 countries and a total of 105 papers were presented and discussed including 21 invited lectures, 6 papers for panel discussion, 52 papers for general oral presentations and 26 papers for general poster presentations.

The signifiance of this special issue comes from the variety of viewpoints on scars and fibrotic disorders – topics discussed partially in the area of plastic surgery – by experts in the fields of plastic surgery, dermatology, aesthetic surgery and wound healing. I hope this special issue contributes to the development of scar management and advancement of basic research worldwide.
